Coed volleyball is a recreational sport that is often played at a highly competitive level by talented players. In coed volleyball, teams are comprised of an equal number of men and women and they play other teams that are made up in a similar manner. While the basic idea behind coed volleyball is to get exercise in an enjoyable atmosphere, the games often get quite competitive.
Makeup of Team
A coed volleyball team puts six players on the court at a time. The team must put out an equal number of men and women on the floor. You may have as many as 12 players on the roster. The roster does not have to be an equal division of men and women, but you cannot put more men than women on the court at any time.
Game Procedure
The ball is put into play by the server. The server stands in the right rear portion of the court behind the endline. She must serve the ball over the net while remaining in the court. Once the ball goes over the net, the receiving team has three hits before it must send the ball over the net. If the team takes two hits or fewer to return the ball to the opponent, there are no requirements on who must hit the ball. However, if the team takes three hits to make a successful return, one of those hits must be taken by a female player.
Match Format
Coed volleyball matches are played in a best-of-three format. Games are played to 25 points in the rally format, which means either team will get a point at the end of the rally. If the serving team wins the point, it holds on to the ball and serves the next point. If the receiving team wins the point, it gets a point on the scoreboard and also takes over the serve. The court is 59 feet long and 29 feet, 6 inches wide. The net is 7 feet, 4 inches from the ground, which is the same height in women's volleyball. The height of the net in men's volleyball is 7 feet, 11 inches.
