Practicing yoga, a demanding form of physical exercise, requires a yoga mat for stability and cushioning. Yoga mats pad smooth surfaces and are used in all types of yoga and meditation. While yoga mats are simple in their application, certain features enhance your yoga practice. Cushioning, or padding, protects the practitioner's point of contact with the floor, such as the hips, spine and elbows during floor postures and the feet during standing sequences. Designed to stay put during yoga practice, mats offer stability and safety during practice by preventing the map from sliding and bunching. Types

Yoga mats are typically made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), plastic, latex, rubber or a blend of these materials. Handwoven, cotton or hemp yoga mats are a natural alternative to manufactured mats. These mats are typically processed without the use of chemicals.

Dimensions

Typical yoga mat dimensions are two feet wide by five feet, eight inches long and three millimeters thick. For taller practitioners, mat measurements should be 85 inches long by 26 inches wide. Thicker mats are available and provide extra padding.

Considerations

While yoga mats include a non-slip surface or texture, energetic styles of yoga such as vinyasa flow, Bikram and power yoga heat the body and promote excessive sweating. A towel or specifically designed blanket to absorb moisture and prevent slipping might be helpful. Covering a yoga mat will also prolong its longevity especially if used daily.

Care

You should regularly clean your yoga mat using a damp cloth, cold water and mild detergent. Alternatively, commercial mat washes are available at yoga specialty stores. Handwoven and hemp mats are machine washable. Dry your mat between each use and store in a mat bag to protect from direct sunlight. Regardless of the type of mat you own, caring for your mat will prolong its life.
