The Bare Escentuals Company set off the mineral makeup craze with its line of makeup products that includes Bare Minerals foundation. Bare Escentuals also produces a full line of makeup products, including eye, cheek and lip color. As with any product, you should know the ingredients of Bare Escentuals products before using them. Some ingredients may vary by product color, but the basic ingredients do not.

Sun Protectants

Some Bare Escentuals products contain ingredients that can help protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. These mineral compounds, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, scatter and reflect UVA and UVB rays from the sun to prevent sunburn. Bare Minerals powder makeup contains 21 percent zinc oxide and 12 percent titanium dioxide, giving the product an SPF number of 15. Diane S. Berson, M.D., of Cornell University, says that the sun protection from makeup products with an SPF of 15 or more is sufficient for incidental sun exposure--that is, if you go outside for only a short while. Dr. Berson cautions that you must apply the makeup properly, as the method and consistency of application may affect the actual sun protection that the product gives you. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are also ingredients in Bare Escentuals blush and may be present in the brand's lipstick as well.

Pigments

Specific pigment ingredients in Bare Escentuals products vary, as a different combination of pigments is necessary to produce each shade of color. Bare Escentuals products contain various iron oxides and other pigments such as carmine for color. Each product's ingredients list gives the specific pigments used to create that shade by color index, or CI, number. The CI number identifies the pigment in the Colour Index International, a database of shades jointly published by the Society of Dyers and Colourists and the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists. Bare Escentuals foundation and blush also contain bismuth oxychloride to give an opalescent tint to the products.

Binders and Water Repellants

Bare Escentuals foundation, blush and eye shadow each contain mica, an ingredient that improves the ability of the makeup to adhere to your skin. Mica may also be present in Bare Escentuals lipstick. Magnesium stearate also acts as a binding agent and makes the Mineral Veil finishing powder water resistant.

Waxes and Oils

Bare Escentuals lipstick contains a variety of waxes and oils to give the product its final shape, a smooth finish and moisturizing properties. Beeswax, candelilla wax and carnauba wax are ingredients, as are oils from the castor, jojoba and sesame seeds.
