Your liver detoxifies harmful chemicals in your blood and manufacturers crucial metabolic enzymes. Practitioners of herbal medicine claim that everything from dandelion extracts to lemon juice can cleanse and detoxify your liver. Most of these claims have no scientific data supporting them. However, there are a few natural supplements, such as milk thistle and S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), that have been shown to benefit the liver, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Taking SAMe

Step 1

Begin taking a daily 200mg SAMe supplement. SAMe is a substance produced by your body that has been shown to prevent and diminish the symptoms of liver disease, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Step 2

Increase your daily dose of SAMe as your stomach adjusts to it. You can eventually take anywhere from 600 to 1200mg per day. Consult your doctor about how much you should aim to take as maximum dose.

Step 3

Take your SAMe tablets with a multivitamin that contains vitamin B12, folic acid, methionine and trimethylglycine. This will help your body absorb the SAMe, which it doesn't do very well when SAMe is taken orally.

Milk Thistle Tea

Step 1

Measure 1 tbsp. of milk thistle seeds and crush them with your mortar and pestle.

Step 2

Boil the crushed seeds in 3 cups of water, then turn off the heat and let them sit for 20 minutes.

Step 3

Strain the mixture. Save the fluid and throw away the crushed seeds.

Step 4

Drink 1 cup of the milk thistle tea 30 minutes before each of your three main meals every day.
