Anchoring the stretch of South Carolina shoreline known as the Grand Strand is the city of Myrtle Beach, which offers a wide variety of outdoor activities for adults and children. Families can enjoy learning about the benefits of the environment while participating in activities from walks on the beach to tours of the ocean on a boat. Many activities in Myrtle Beach are designed for families with kids seeking to have a fun, but health-conscious beach adventure.
Shell Hunting
You can go seashell hunting on all of the beaches in Myrtle Beach, but the natural, solitary environment of Huntington Beach State Park offers the perfect environment for beachcombing. Park naturalists are on hand to teach you and your child how to identify the many seashells that wash ashore. You will learn about the best areas along the Grand Strand to find seashells as well as prime times for taking the kids beachcombing.
Miniature Golf
Myrtle Beach is a golfing destination for adults, but kids don't have to be left out of the fun. According to VisitMyrtleBeach.com, Myrtle Beach is nicknamed the "Mini Golf Capital of The World" in reference to the 50 miniature golf courses that dot the Grand Strand. Some of these miniature golf courses have multiple 18-hole courses for your children to play. Playing miniature golf gives children an opportunity to learn hand-eye coordinate and enjoy the outdoors. Some of these miniature golf courses will sell a pass that allows you and your kids to play for the entire day for one price.
Water Sports
When on vacation in Myrtle Beach, you and your children can learn how to surf or windsurf. Harness the power of the ocean's waves as you race to shore on the Atlantic Ocean's surf, or enjoy a casual wind-blown ride while wind surfing. If your children want to move a little faster, spend an afternoon as a family experiencing the physical challenge of riding a jet ski on Myrtle Beach's waterways. Even though the speed is slower, renting a paddle boat at Broadway at the Beach will provide a workout for your family as your feet power the paddle boat around a 23-acre lake. This venue is the largest shopping, dining and entertainment complex in the state, so even if you're not boating, you'll get plenty of walking in.
Amusement and Water Parks
Myrtle Beach offers both amusement and water parks to entertain your children during the day, offering them a bit of a physical workout while having fun. The kids will love walking through Family Kingdom, an old-fashioned beach amusement park featuring the historic Swamp Fox wooden coaster and the state's largest Ferris wheel. They'll want to stop along the way to check out a ride or two or three. The water park at Family Kingdom directly across the street offers the challenge of climbing to the top of flights of stairs where you and the kids will then be rewarded with a cooling ride down one of more than eight water slides. Other major water parks in the Myrtle Beach area include Wild Water and Wheels and Myrtle Waves, both offering a multitude of water activities to keep kids on the go.
Beach Sports
The beaches in Myrtle beach are lined with playgrounds and sporting equipment such as volleyball nets and horseshoe pits. The playgrounds include slides and climbing activities for your children. Volleyball nets only require you to bring your own ball to play. Other sports activities located along the beach include basketball and tennis court nets. Your kids could start their own beach football or soccer game on the wide beaches of Myrtle Beach. After spending a day playing sports, take your children for a walk on the new 1.2-mile boardwalk that opened in April 2010.
