If you wake up in the middle of the night with a toothache, you may want to get quick relief from the pain. Toothaches can result from trapped food, gum infection, cracked tooth or tooth decay. Free home remedies can reduce some of the symptoms until you are able to make it to a dental appointment for a more permanent fix.

Water

The Doctors Book of Home Remedies states that rinsing the mouth with body-temperature water may relieve some toothaches. The rinsing action may dislodge food that could be causing the toothache. You may add 1 tsp. of salt to the body-temperature water and use the rinse after mealtimes and before bed.

Clove

Clove is a natural pain reliever recommended by the Granny Med website. Soak a clean cotton swab in clove oil and apply the swab directly to the site of the toothache. Alternatively, a small drop can be applied directly onto the tooth to relieve pain. It has an unpleasant taste, so avoid your tongue during application. It is not necessary to ingest the clove oil to have it numb the affected area.

Whiskey

If you have whiskey on hand, you can use it to treat your toothache at home. Fill a shot glass with whiskey and place the alcohol into your mouth without swallowing it. Keep the whiskey in your mouth for approximately a minute before spitting it out. Your gums will absorb the alcohol which will numb the pain caused by the toothache.

Ice Cubes

According to the "Doctors Book of Home Remedies," massaging your hand with an ice cube can reduce toothache pain by approximately 50 percent. A small ice cube should be massaged into the area on your hand between your thumb and forefinger for about five minutes. This process blocks pain impulses from traveling through the nerves to your tooth.
