ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a neurobiological condition that affects concentration and impulse control. Children with ADHD are often disorganized and unfocused, and may also be hyperactive and difficult to control. There are a number of homeopathic remedies available to treat the symptoms of ADHD. The three most effective are stramonium, cina and Hyoscyamus niger. It's important to note that although these remedies are natural, they may still be dangerous in large doses. Always consult with a homeopathic specialist before beginning any kind of treatment.

Stramonium

Stramonium--also called jimsonweed or thornapple--is a bushy weed that produces large, white flowers and smooth, black seeds. Though its country of origin is unknown, stramonium grows wild across North America and can also be found in Europe and Asia. All parts of stramonium are poisonous to humans, but the seeds are especially toxic. In large quantities, the plant can cause dry mouth, hallucinations and euphoria, and even dementia and death. However, used in appropriate doses, stramonium is a homeopathic treatment for a range of mental and physical conditions, including ADHD. According to an article written by Lewis Mehl-Madrona, M.D., Ph.D. for The Healing Center, for the purposes of ADHD, stramonium is best used for children who have many irrational fears, who suffer from severe mood swings and/ or violent episodes, who are often irritable and agitated or for those who are recovering from an emotional or physical trauma.

Cina

Artemisia cina, or wormseed, is a small, semi-shrubby perennial that produces small greenish-yellow flowers. Cina is native to China and the Middle East and has been used for centuries as an effective treatment against parasitic worms. The active ingredient in cina is santonica, derived from the flower of the cina plant. The flowers must be harvested in July and August before the flowers fully open and the santonica loses potency. Dr. Mehl-Madrona states that, as an ADHD remedy, cina is recommended for children who are contentious, defiant and irritable, who dislike being touched and are very restless and prone to excessive fidgeting and physical aggression.

Hyoscyamus Niger

Hyoscyamus niger, or black henbane, has also been used as a medicinal plant for centuries. Hyoscyamus niger is a tall, coarse plant with sticky, fibrous hairs on its foliage. It produces white flowers with dark-purple, lacy veins and has a pungent, foul odor. It is native to Europe and is commercially cultivated there. Hyoscyamus niger was introduced to the United States in the 17th century as a medicinal and ornamental plant and now grows here as a weed. Every part of the plant is highly toxic to humans and animals. However, under controlled conditions, Hyoscyamus niger is effective as a sedative and as an antispasmodic drug. According to Dr. Mehl-Madrona, as an ADHD treatment, it is recommended for children who have poor impulse control, who talk excessively and who exhibit frenetic, overly exuberant or prematurely sexualized behavior.
