Natural Detox Herbs

The practice of detoxification has become more popular in recent years. Although some physicians do not believe that the detoxification process is necessary, many holistic and natural health practitioners argue that it is essential for maintaining optimal health. As a result, many detoxification products have become available both online and at natural food retailers. There is also an array of natural herbs that are believed to promote the detoxification process and lead to optimal health. Consult with a physician or health care provider before beginning an herbal detoxification regimen.

Fennel

Fennel typically grows in areas of Europe and Asia and is part of the celery family. It increase urination and is thought to promote kidney and liver function. It is also believed to cleanse the body of waste, flush the colon and aid in the healing process. According to "Herbal Medicine," two to three tbsp. of crushed fennel can be simmered in boiling water, strained and used in a vaporizer, bath or tea to aid in releasing toxins from the body.

Slippery Elm

Slippery elm typically grows in the United States and eastern Canada. According to "The People's Pharmacy Guide to Home and Herbal Remedies," slippery elm has a variety of medicinal uses and can be used to treat urinary tract infection, cough, sore throat and wounds. It is also believed to be effective at cleansing and removing excess waste from the colon. According to "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," slippery elm tea can be used as an enema for rapid cleansing and detoxification of the colon.

Milk Thistle

Milk thistle is believed to be effective in the cleansing and detoxification of the liver. It is sometimes referred to as St. Mary's thistle and grows throughout Europe and the United States. According to "the People's Pharmacy Guide to Home and Herbal Remedies," silymarin, the detoxifying component of milk thistle, not only detoxifies the liver but can reduce the inflammation that is caused by cirrhosis and hepatitis. It is also believed to be effective in protecting and detoxifying the kidneys.

Nettle

Nettle, sometimes referred to as "stinging nettle," is thought to be another very effective detoxification herb. According to "Herbal Medicine," nettle aids in detoxifying the lungs, blood, stomach and intestines. It is also a diuretic and is thought to promote kidney function. Nettle can be used in the form of a detoxifying juice or tea. The leaves may also be eaten cooked or used in a salad.
