Basketball is a game that requires speed, quickness, athletic ability and talent. Players can do drills that help them improve their skill level. It's vital for players to build on their strengths and improve their weaknesses. Drills to improve shooting, ball-handling and defensive play can make a player far more effective.

Shooting Drill

Work on your shooting skill at the start and conclusion of every practice. Start at the right baseline and take five shots. Move to the right elbow--foul line extended--and take five more shots. Do the same at the top of the key, the left elbow and the baseline. Keep a record of your progress by recording it in a notebook at the end of each shooting session.

Two-on-One Defensive Drill

This involves one defensive player and two offensive teammates. One of the two offensive players will come over halfcourt with the ball and the other will be stationed near the basket. On defense, you will try to stop your opponents from scoring. They must pass the ball at least three times before taking a shot. Your job on defense is to steal the ball, block a shot, get the rebound or force a turnover. If you can stop your opponents on three plays out of 10, you will be successful and improve defensively. This will improve your defensive intensity and effort.

Ball Handling

Start off at the baseline with two basketballs, on in each hand. Dribble the ball in your dominant hand and as soon as you hear that ball hit the floor, dribble the other ball. Start walking while dribbling until you get to the free throw line. At that point, break into a slow job until you get to midcourt. At that point, you must turn around and dribble while running back to the baseline. This will improve your ability to control the ball.
