Herbs that improve memory usually accomplish that task by helping with blood circulation to the brain. Any lifestyle choice that inhibits circulation--drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes, for instance--will affect the brain, robbing it of vital nutrients. By improving the circulation, herbs improve the delivery system of those nutrients and oxygen, making the brain function better and improving memory and thought processes. Herbs do have side effects and drug interaction issues, though, and you need to tell your health care provider when you are taking herbal supplements.
Gingko Biloba
Gingko biloba is the best known and most widely used herb to improve memory and brain function. The leaves and seeds are usually crushed to obtain an extract, GBE, that is then used in supplements, including drops and capsules. The dose varies for different uses, usually between 120 and 160 mg of the extract two or three times a day. However, Herbs2000 reports that for better brain function herbalists will prescribe up to 240 mg of GBE per dose. It can take as long as eight weeks before memory improvement is discerned. Side effects are usually mild, but include headache and stomach upset.
Hawthorn
The anti-oxidant-rich flowers and berries of the Hawthorn bush are herbs that aid the circulatory system and are often used to treat cardiac problems such as heart failure and rhythm issues. This herb is usually given with gingko to help brain function. Hawthorn increases the blood flow to the head, increasing the oxygen that's delivered and improving memory. Dose can be anywhere from 80 to 300 mg twice per day. Hawthorn has few side effects according to herbs2000, but because of its effect on the heart, you should always tell your health care provider when planning to take this herb.
Other Herbs
Other herbs prescribed to enhance memory are usually given in combination with gingko and Hawthorn. Gotu kola will help to thin the blood, improving circulation, according to an article in the Herbal Supplement Guide. That article also lists bacopin, which herbalists believe will enhance intelligence as well as memory, and schisandra and rosemary as other herbs to help boost brain function and memory. Some of these herbs have side effects, especially bacopin, which can cause hearing loss, according to Herbs2000.
