Reiki is a form of energy medicine originating in Japan during the early 20th century. Based on the belief that your body possesses an innate ability to heal itself, practitioners access an energy field surrounding your body with their hands. This helps to increase energy flow in order to enhance your body's healing abilities.
Using Reiki to Heal
Reiki is not used to diagnose, treat or cure any specific disease and should not be used as a replacement for conventional medicine. The American Cancer Society explains that treatment sessions are designed to bring on a sense of relaxation, decrease stress and anxiety, and increase well-being. Reiki is considered safe and has been used to reduce pain, decrease blood pressure and heart rate, alleviate depression and insomnia, and boost the immune system.
In-Person Healing Treatments
Reiki sessions require you to sit or lie down, fully clothed. The practitioner will place her hands lightly on or above your body. Sessions, typically one hour in length, involve the practitioner holding his hands over various points of your body to help clear and enhance the energy source.
Self-Healing Treatments
As a follow-up to in-person treatments and to prolong the healing benefits, you can practice reiki on yourself. Self-treatment can be performed on the head, body, back and legs. By learning the main chakra points and various hand positions, you can begin using reiki on yourself.
About Reiki Practitioners
The National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine reports that currently, certification and training of practitioners is not fully regulated. A reiki master must conduct practitioner training, a status that can take years to achieve. Before hiring a practitioner, research their training, background and experience.
