While you may love your tattoos, there are times when you might need or want to cover them. Many people opt to hide their ink for formal occasions or may need to cover it in the workplace. Clothing or accessories can hide some tattoos, but others may require make-up. Learn what products you should use and how to use them to keep your ink under cover when necessary.

Clothing

Perhaps the easiest way to cover tattoos is simply to use clothing or accessories to hide your ink. Clothing can easily cover tattoos on the back, upper arms or legs. Women may find opaque, dark-colored tights helpful for tattoos on the legs or feet. Scarves can cover tattoos on the neck or upper chest in some cases, while a wide watch or bracelet may hide a wrist tattoo. If you have full sleeves or tattoos on your lower arms, opaque skin-toned covers are available from InkArmor.com or TatJacket.com. These are ideal if you need to cover ink on your lower arms while wearing a uniform shirt or a light-colored dress shirt.

Covering Under Clothes

If you need to hide your tattoo under sheer or semi-transparent clothing, full coverage is not required. A small tattoo can be hidden with a flesh-colored adhesive bandage, or you can apply your usual cosmetic concealer and set it with translucent powder. These options will disguise your tattoo under clothing, but are not suitable if it's uncovered. You might also find that a camisole, undershirt or lightweight T-shirt can provide coverage for tattoos on your torso.

Cosmetic Cover-Up

Hiding visible ink for a formal occasion or covering a neck or face tattoo is somewhat more difficult, but not impossible. Everyday cosmetics may not be up to the job, but specialty heavy-duty tattoo cover is available in some department stores or specialty cosmetics retailers. Clean your skin, then apply your preferred tattoo cover make-up. You may need to blend more than one color to achieve a good match to your natural skin tone. With a brush, makeup sponge or your fingers, blend the cover-up into the surrounding skin around your tattoo. Take a stipple brush and tap concealer one shade darker or lighter over the covered tattoo. Use a powder brush or puff to apply translucent setting powder to your tattoo cover. This method provides excellent coverage; however, for a wedding or similar occasion, consult a professional makeup artist for an airbrush tattoo cover-up.
