Like alcohol and drug abuse, Internet addiction is about dependence. Being dependent on the Internet and the compulsive need to check websites, email, sports scores, blogs and community forums leads to damaged relationships, lost time, and possible termination of your employment. The first step to recovery is recognizing you have a problem. Consult a doctor or psychologist if you feel Internet addiction is causing problems in your life.
Preoccupation
One common sign of Internet addiction is a constant preoccupation with what's going on on the Internet, such as wondering if you have e-mails in your inbox, itching to know the latest blog updates, or checking the news. This preoccupation may cause you to daydream while performing important activities, such as watching your kids or doing your job.
Withdrawal
If you go through common psychological withdrawal symptoms when away from the Internet for long periods of time, it may also be a sign of Internet addiction, according to Texas State University-San Marcos. Nervousness, irritability, depression and moodiness are all such symptoms. Even if you desire to cut back on your Internet usage, these symptoms may still manifest.
Long Hours
Staying on the Internet for long periods of time but not actually accomplishing much may be another sign. Some related symptoms are skipping from site to site, even though no new information has loaded, and constantly checking email even when you're not expecting anything.
Deception
If you've ever lied to friends, family members, co-workers or your boss about the amount of time you spend on the Internet, this could also be a sign of addiction, according to the University of Texas at Dallas. Continuing to surf the Internet even after warnings from your supervisor and putting your job at risk shows a reckless side of addiction where you don't care what you have to give up in order to get your "fix."
Escape
Another classic sign of addiction is using your vice to escape the problems of your everyday life. If you use the Internet to create a different online persona to get away from the things you don't like about yourself or you avoid solving the problems in your life, you may have a problem.
