Aciphex, or rabeprazole is a medication in a medication used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, GERD and other disorders of stomach acid production. According to Drugs.com, Aciphex also promotes healing of erosive esophagitis or damage to your esophagus caused by stomach acid, and may be used in conjunction with other medications for the treatment of stomach ulcers cause by H. pylori. There are some side effects associated with Aciphex 20 mg that users should become aware of.

Nausea and Diarrhea

Patients may experience nausea and diarrhea while taking Aciphex 20 mg, says PDR Health. Taking Aciphex with food may help lessen these effects. Nausea and diarrhea may prove temporary until the body adjusts to this medication. Small dietary changes may help to alleviate gastrointestinal side effects. Eating a bland diet with smaller meals eaten more frequently can help to alleviate nausea and diarrhea. Those suffering from diarrhea should increase their intake of water and fluids. Patients should report severe diarrhea to a physician. It may lead to the development of dehydration, which can be dangerous.

Headache

Aciphex 20 mg may cause headache or migraine in some users. Headache may lessen over time as the body adjusts to Aciphex. If headache becomes bothersome, patients may ask their provider if the use of an over-the-counter medication such as acetaminophen can provide relief from headache pain and discomfort. Those who suffer from migraine headaches may require a stronger prescription medication for adequate relief. A severe headache especially if accompanied by visual changes, dizziness, fainting, or weakness on one side of the body may indicate something serious and should be reported to a physician immediately, says PDR Health.

Insomnia

According to Drugs.com, insomnia may occur as a side effect of Aciphex. Certain relaxation techniques may help to alleviate insomnia. Patients should consult a health-care provide if they experience severe insomnia. There are prescription medications available to treat insomnia.

Dry Mouth and Sore Throat

According to PDR Health, Aciphex can cause dry mouth and sore throat. Increasing daily fluid intake and the use of throat drops or lozenges may help to relieve mouth and throat symptoms. If sore throat is accompanied by difficulty swallowing, swollen lymph glands, fatigue and fever it can indicate a throat infection that may require treatment. A physician should be notified for further instruction.
