Doctors use chelation therapy to treat metal poisoning. Chelation therapy involves the injection of chemical agents that bind to metal molecules in the bloodstream. Once the metal molecules are bound, they are rendered harmless and can be filtered out of your blood by your kidneys. Some of chelators, such as dimercaptocuccinic acid (DMSA) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) are available in oral formulations. Also, there are herbs and vitamin supplements that you can take to chelate metal molecules naturally. However, you should always consult a physician and receive professional chelation therapy if you suspect that you or your child has been exposed to a toxic metal.
Step 1
Consume DMSA capsules to begin the chelation process. One accepted daily oral dose of DMSA is 10mg per kg of body weight taken in divided doses for three days. The treatment can be repeated every fourteen days. To calculate how much you should take, divide your body weight in lbs. by 2.2--the number of lbs. in a kg--then multiply that result by 10.
Step 2
Supplement your DMSA consumption with oral EDTA. The chemical is available in liquid form over-the-counter; do not exceed the amount indicated on the packaging label. The benefits of oral EDTA are still debated within the medical community, so you should consult your doctor before consuming the chemical orally.
Step 3
Consume fresh cilantro, high protein foods and a vitamin C and E supplement on a daily basis. These natural dietary components have been shown to facilitate and decrease any side effects of the process of metal chelation.
