Widely available in local supermarkets and drug stores, neem leaf products can be used in treating minor health ailments or diseases. Available in various supplement forms that include pills, powders, and liquid extract, neem leaf supplements can be included in your normal dietary regimen on a daily basis. The benefits of neem leaves are many and differ according to the method of supplement use.

Insect Repellent

One of the many benefits that neem leaf offers is relief from insect bites. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, neem-based oils can repel insects when applied to the skin. Neem oil should be diluted with a plain oil like olive oil prior to applying it to the skin in order to limit the possibility of minor irritation or rash.

Stomach Treatment

Another common use of neem leaf supplements is for the treatment of minor stomach disorders and irritations. According to the University of Michigan Health System, neem leaves have traditionally been used by alternative medicine doctors in India for the treatment of disorders ranging from diarrhea to stomach ulcers. The University goes on to state that the effectiveness of these treatment methods have been confirmed by modern medical research, especially in the area of stomach ulcer treatment. Other gastrointestinal disorders that can effectively be treated by neem leaves include abdominal cramping and intestinal infections, according to the University website.

General Use

Neem leaf supplements can be used in treating many types of health ailments, all without the risk of serious side effects according to the University of Michigan Health System. General disorders that may be effectively alleviated with the use of neem leaf-based products include lowering the production of dental plaque, treating minor skin ulcers and infections (when used as a skin oil or lotion), treating scabies infections, and even effectively treating periodontal disease when used in gel form. Side effects associated with neem leaf supplements are few, according to the University, but children are recommended to stay away from using the herb as a small number of cases of medical complications have been reported on the University's website.
