It's normal to have occasional bouts of anxiety, according to the Mayo Clinic. If, however, you are frequently overwhelmed by feelings of tension and angst and it interferes with your ability to function, you may have a common condition called generalized anxiety disorder. The National Institute of Mental Health says about 40 million adults in the United States suffer from anxiety disorders.
Antidepressant Medication
Generalized anxiety disorder can be a long-term condition that is sometimes managed with therapy and/or antidepressant medication such as fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil) and imipramine (Tofranil). However, the NIMH says it typically takes four to six weeks before symptoms start to dissipate.
Sedatives
Benzodiazepines have sedating effects that are sometimes prescribed in the short term for quick relief from anxiety. Examples include clonazepam (Klonopin), diazepam (Valium) and alprazolam (Xanax). Benzodiazepines can be habit forming. Side effects may include drowsiness, memory and balance problems as well as reduced muscle coordination.
Beta Blockers
Beta blockers such as propranolol (Inderal) and atenolol (Tenormin), block the nerves that stimulate the heart to beat faster and may offer rapid relief for the physical symptoms of anxiety such as a racing heart, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Beta blockers can be beneficial for predictable anxiety-provoking situations, such as giving a speech or performing in a play, according to the NIMH.
Valerian
The herb valerian may have calming effects that relieve anxiety. The University of Maryland Medical Center says valerian has been used for hundreds of years to treat anxiety, sleep disturbances and nervous tension. While generally regarded as safe, the medical center warns that in some cases, valerian may actually intensify anxiety.
Aerobic Exercise
Exercising is a potent antidote against stress and can lift your mood, according to the Mayo Clinic. A Polish study, published in "Psychiatria Polska" in 2004, found that exercise can reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression. Aerobic options include jogging, brisk walking and swimming.
Meditation
Meditation can ease anxiety by providing a sense of calm. The Mayo Clinic says peaceful feelings may continue throughout the day as you go about your normal activities.
Additional Tips
Keeping anxiety at bay can be a long-term challenge. The Mayo Clinic says you can help diminish its effects by diligently managing your time and energy. Also, limit your consumption of caffeine, nicotine and alcohol because they can fuel feelings of anxiety.
