The common cold can strike at any time during the year. Along with it comes the viral symptoms of coughing, nasal congestion, sneezing and headache. There is no cure for a cold virus. Many treatments, however, are available to relieve the symptoms and make sufferers more comfortable until the illness subsides.
Eat More Chicken Soup
MayoClinic.com explains that chicken soup helps relieve flu and cold symptoms in two ways. First, it blocks the cells of the immune system that cause the body to respond to inflammation. Second, it helps relieve congestion as it quickens the movement of mucus through the nose. This decreases the amount of time the virus subjects itself to the membranes lining the nose.
Rest
When suffering from the symptoms of a cold such as fever and cough, it is beneficial to stay home from work or school. Not only does this reduce the risk of spreading the infection to others, it gives the body an opportunity to strengthen its immune system, thus increasing its ability to fight the infection. Bed rest will enable the body to do its job more effectively.
Relieve Pain
When experiencing any pain from the symptoms of a cold, whether it be body or head aches, an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can provide relief. A pediatrician should be consulted before administering medications to children younger than the age of 12. Throat lozenges or sprays can help relieve pain from a sore throat. A doctor should be consulted about a sore throat accompanied by a fever.
Saline Nasal Drops
Colds infect the lining of membranes in the throat and nose, thus causing a buildup of mucus resulting in congestion. To alleviate this, use over-the-counter saline nasal drops. These provide moisture for the membranes and loosen mucus.
Increase Fluids
Dehydration can occur easily due to the loss of fluids with mucus production and fever. Drinking plenty of clear liquids such as water and apple juice can help prevent cold-related dehydration. Drinking milk, or eating thick soups may increase congestion.
