Doubles badminton requires two teams, each consisting of two people. Each team stands on either side of the court. One team serves the shuttlecock, also called the birdie, to the other side. The teams then try to volley the birdie back and forth without the shuttlecock being hit by the same side or player twice in a row.
Court
For doubles badminton, the entire court is in bounds. For serving you will use the shorter back line. A shuttle is considered in bounds if it falls on any boundary line or if it touches the net and still goes to the other side. A doubles badminton court is 44 feet long and 20 feet wide, according to Badminton Source. The net should be 5 feet high.
Coin Toss
A coin is tossed to decide who serves first. The team that wins the toss gets to choose whether they would like to serve first.
Serve
Play begins when one team serves. The first serve begins on the right side of the court, according to Iowa State University Recreational Services. The player who is serving must serve the shuttlecock diagonally to the opposite side of the court. If it does not fall within this boundary it is a fault, meaning invalid. If the serve hits the net and lands in the proper court or is completely missed, it can be redone. If the opposing team can not return the volley, the serving team gets a point. If the serving team misses a volley, no one gets a point and it is the other team's turn to serve.
Fault
Faults include illegal serves, touching the net with your racket, reaching over the net, double hitting, stepping out of bounds or hitting the shuttlecock out of bounds. If a serving team faults, they lose the serve. If the opposing team faults, the serving team gets a point.
Scoring
Doubles badminton games are played to 11 points, according to Iowa State University. There are three games played in a match--making the team that wins the best of three the overall winner.
