4 Ways to Prevent Atherosclerosis

1. Follow a Heart-Healthy Diet

Prevent atherosclerosis, a hardening of the arteries, by following a heart-healthy diet. Eating foods that are low in fat, salt and cholesterol can be a natural way to regulate high blood pressure and cholesterol levels and prevent plaque buildup. If you need to lose a few pounds, this type of diet can also work to your advantage. Eat balanced meals that give you plenty of fiber and all of the vitamins you need. Fresh fruits and vegetables are ideal choices for most meals, as are whole-grain bread, rices and cereals. Choose lean proteins like chicken and fish and limit the amount of red meat you consume. The amount of omega-3 fatty acids you get from fish is very beneficial to your heart health. Fish-oil supplements are also an option if you don't like the taste of fish. Most natural food stores and even supermarkets sell fish-oil supplements.

2. Exercise Regularly

Just 30 minutes of daily exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight and strengthen your body overall. Choose aerobic sports that raise your heart rate, such as jogging, swimming or playing a pickup game of basketball. Start off with just a short walk if 30 minutes is more than you can manage at first. Any amount of physical activity you engage in will lessen your risk of atherosclerosis and heart disease.

3. Quit Smoking

Quit smoking to prevent atherosclerosis. In addition to instances of lung disease, studies show a higher risk of atherosclerosis in smokers. You don't necessarily need to give up all vices, though. Data suggests that one or two glasses of wine each day can actually reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.

4. Take Aspirin as a Preventive Measure

Ask your doctor about taking a low dose of aspirin (usually 81 mg) daily to prevent a hardening of your arteries and heart disease. Aspirin is not always an option, however, for people who have stomach problems or some other medical issues.
