If your scalp is itchy and irritated, it may be caused by scalp psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis, says the Mayo Clinic. Scalp psoriasis causes an itchy scalp and may form silvery, scaly skin on the scalp that bleeds when it is removed. Seborrheic dermatitis scales are removed more easily, but the itching may be more severe. Consult a doctor to determine if home remedies are appropriate for your itchy scalp condition.
Shampoo More Often
Shampooing hair frequently may help loosen dandruff scales on the scalp that cause itching, says the Mayo Clinic. Shampooing may also be particularly helpful if your scalp and hair is oily. Cutting down on excess oil will prevent irritation of the scalp.
If your doctor recommends it, use an over-the-counter medicated shampoo to reduce scaling and itching. Washing your hair with shampoo once a day or every other day may help prevent the buildup of dead skin cells that make your scalp itch.
Switch Shampoos
Switching shampoos frequently may reduce itching due to psoriasis, says Kristin Leiferman, M.D., professor of dermatology at the Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minn. Dr. Leiferman recommends trying five or six different shampoos, then rotating them to help reduce itchiness and flakes. The scalp may become tolerant if you use the same shampoo every day. Switch shampoos every few days to help reduce symptoms of psoriasis.
Mineral Oil Treatment
The Mayo Clinic recommends coating the scalp in mineral oil overnight to help loosen scales and flakes of skin on the scalp that may cause itching. Before bed, carefully drip mineral oil onto the scalp, then gently massage the head to evenly distribute the oil. Cover the hair and scalp in a shower cap and sleep with the mineral oil over your hair overnight, suggests the Mayo Clinic. Wash your hair as usual the following morning.
Enjoy Some Sun
Exposure to the sun may help reduce dandruff flare-ups in some individuals, says the Mayo Clinic. Prolonged sun exposure may increase your chance for skin cancer, but a small amount of sun exposure to the scalp may help reduce itchiness and flaking. Wear sunscreen on both your face and body, and sit in the sun for several minutes to help reduce symptoms of a flaking, itchy scalp.
