The National Survey on Drug Abuse and Health reported that 5.3 million Americans 12 or older abused cocaine at some point in 2008. Cocaine produces an immediate pleasurable effect that makes the user energized for a brief time. Cocaine causes a number of health problems and can eventually lead to death if the abuse continues. There are several different treatment programs available for cocaine addiction.
The Biophysical Program
A biophysical drug rehab program treats both the physical and mental dependency on cocaine. A comprehensive program, like a biophysical program, is the most successful treatment program because it is long term because it can last over 30 days, according to Drug and Alcohol Rehabs. The individual enrolled in this program should no longer feel the effects from the drugs and can focus on the emotional issues tied to drug dependency. The biophysical program is often the most expensive form of drug rehab, costing as much as three times more than other addiction programs, states Drug and Alcohol Rehabs.
The Dual-Diagnosis Program
A dual-diagnosis program, otherwise known as co-occurring disorders, structures around the idea of substance abuse occurs with an underlying mental disorder, says Drug and Alcohol Rehabs. Physicians use medications in this treatment program to treat the cocaine addiction as well as the mental disorder the individual has.
The 12-Step Program
The 12-step program is the standard in treating drug addictions and the results vary based on the individual's faith and willpower. The program was founded in the 1930s and is the basis for group programs like Cocaine Anonymous, Alcoholics Anonymous, and Narcotics Anonymous, according to Drug and Alcohol Rehabs. There is no medical intervention with this program and the program is only successful if the cocaine addict sticks to the 12 steps.
Treatment Setting
Due to the short number of inpatient beds available, nearly 90 percent of individuals treated for drug addiction in the United States are on an outpatient basis, according to Drug and Alcohol Rehabs. These outpatient treatments include outpatient counseling and meetings and are successful when the individual follows through with the treatment programs. Long-term inpatient addiction programs are often more successful than outpatient treatment programs and produce better results, says Drug and Alcohol Rehabs.
