Skin care changes are a natural part of the aging process. As you get older, your skin may become thinner and drier and fine lines and wrinkles are likely to appear. Your skin can age at a quicker rate if you don't follow a good skin care routine. Although you can't stop the clock, there are things you can do to prevent premature signs of aging.
Sun Protection
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, most premature aging is caused by prolonged sun exposure. Changes to skin that can occur from sun damage include age spots, freckles, spider veins, wrinkles, blotchiness and dryness. The ultraviolet rays from the sun break down collagen in the sun. To stop premature aging, wear clothing that shields the skin from the sun. While outdoors, slather on sunblock with SPF 30 or higher to exposed areas of the skin. Reapply the sunblock every couple of hours if you are out in the sun for long periods of time.
Antioxidant Skin Care Products
The Cleveland Clinic states that skin care products with antioxidants have the ability to break down free radicals before they damage the skin. Free radicals are unstable chemicals that can break down lipids in the skin. Examples of antioxidant ingredients in skin care products include green tea, beta carotene, vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E. Keep the skin hydrated and protected by applying an antioxidant lotion on a daily basis.
No Smoking
Smoking accelerates the aging process of the skin and can cause a wrinkled and dried-out appearance. Stop smoking to prevent wrinkling and improve the skin's texture.
Dietary Changes
It is recommended by the Cleveland Clinic that a person follow a well-balanced diet if she wishes to combat aging skin. Limit foods high in saturated fats, such as fried foods, fast food, candy, pastries, cookies, fatty cuts of meat and chips. To get plenty of nutrients for skin health, eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Drink at least eight glasses of water each day.
