Detoxing has gained in popularity since the turn of this newest century, as people try to cope with the growing complexity of the world by simplifying their lives and returning to a cleaner, healthier state of being. One of the tenets of Eastern medicine is that you can detoxify the body through the sweat glands. Western medicine tells us that toxins are flushed out by the liver and kidneys, but studies have shown no harmful effects from using foot detoxing methods. The two most commonly used forms of foot detox are ionic foot detoxers and foot detox pads.

Ionic Foot Detoxer

Step 1

Wash your feet with soap and warm water. Use a loofah or net scrubber if you need to exfoliate dry skin. Rinse your feet thoroughly with warm water so that no soap residue is left behind to react with the detox salts or pads.

Step 2

Fill the ionic foot bath with warm water, up to the fill line.

Step 3

Plug in the ionic foot bath, and turn it on. Set the dial, if there is one, to adjust the agitation of the water.

Step 4

Add the special salts that came with your kit. Read the instructions as to how much to add. This will vary by manufacturer, so don't guess.

Step 5

Soak your feet in the ionic foot bath according to the manufacturer's recommendations. This is usually about 30 minutes.

Foot Detox Pads:

Step 1

Wash, rinse and dry your feet thoroughly. Exfoliate with a loofah or net scrubber if you have excessive dry skin.

Step 2

Peel the backing off of your foot detox pads to expose the self-adhesive underneath. Follow the diagrams or instructions that came with the pads to place them correctly on your feet. Some detox foot pads cover the entire bottom of your foot, while others are meant to be placed on your instep and arch.

Step 3

Sleep with the foot detox pads on. Remove and discard them in the morning. Wear a fresh pair every night until the pads appear clean when you remove them.
