A positive attitude can make the difference between success and failure, happiness and sadness, fulfillment and emptiness. Many times an attitude can set you apart from others. According to Mind Tools, negative thinking damages confidence, harms performance and paralyzes mental skills. Having a positive attitude can affect both you individually and the people around you. It can help to influence your future.

Believe in Yourself

Negative thoughts sometimes come, and difficulty arises because they are hard to conquer. These negative thoughts may center on feeling inadequate or unworthy or on an inability to perform. An example might be how you feel prior to an interview for a job. If you feel unsure of yourself, you may project that insecurity to the interviewer. This can make or break whether you get hired.
Believing in yourself means believing that you deserve this, that you can perform well and that you have the ability to do what you set out to do. The Mayo Clinic reports that a positive attitude can lead to better coping during times of stress. This in turn can assist with your performance at your job or at home.

Anticipate Joy and Happiness

When people anticipate unhappiness or dissatisfaction, that's what they most often will experience. On the other hand, anticipating joy or satisfaction in a certain event or encounter can help joy come into your life. The Mayo Clinic reports that a positive attitude can lead to lower rates of depression.

Feel Connected

Watching the news can make one feel depressed, fearful and unable to make an impact. When someone feels alone or isolated, it can lead to negative attitudes or outcomes for the individual. Realizing the connections that one has to others, to the immediate environment and to the world, has a profound effect on the individual. In today's society, people can easily become disconnected from contact with others and with things like the environment.
When people spend time helping a neighbor or doing something small for the environment, they may realize their impact on others or on the earth. Feeling connected and recognizing that we have an inherent connection with others makes us feel important and helps us understand that we are not alone. The Mayo Clinic reports that a positive attitude can lead to a longer life, as well as increased psychological and physical well-being.
