When a child is potty trained during the day but wets the bed at night, both parents and child can be distressed. The National Association for Continence reports that bed-wetting affects 5 million children a year. They remind parents that children do not wet the bed on purpose. Pediatricians, meanwhile, do not worry about bed-wetting generally until a child is 6 years old.

Positive Reinforcement

Giving positive reinforcement when the bed is not wet can instill self-confidence in the child. Try a sticker chart, positive words or an incentive system. Negative feedback when the child does wet the bed is not recommended, as it can cause more stress. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends not making a big deal about the bed-wetting.

Limit Fluids Before Bedtime

Limiting fluids one or two hours before bedtime can sometimes curb bed-wetting. Avoid giving your child caffeinated beverages, especially before bedtime.

Lifting Technique

Some parents find that waking their child before they themselves go to bed can eliminate wetting. Parents should gently wake the child and take him to the bathroom so he can urinate.

Protection

Using a sheet protector or diaper can sometimes alleviate the stress that comes with bed-wetting.

Bed Alarms

The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that bed alarms can work 50 to 70 percent of the time. These alarms detect the wetness almost immediately, and the child can awaken to go to the bathroom.

Other Considerations

Doctors sometimes prescribe medications or behavioral therapy for older children. It is also important to ensure that there are no physical causes. The University of Florida IFAS Extension recommends that you consult a physician if the child is older than 6, if he is bothered by the bed-wetting, if it started after the child was dry for months or if you are overly frustrated about the bed-wetting.
