Stretch marks occur when the skin becomes overstretched due to rapid weight gain. This causes a disruption in collagen, whereby reddish or purple indented lines may appear on the surface of the skin. Removal options for stretch marks include laser therapy, dermabrasion and a prescription retinoid cream. Since stretch marks can be difficult to remove, you can use tactics to hide them from view.
Sunless Tanning Products
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, sunless tanning products can hide the appearance of stretch marks on the body. Over-the-counter lotions and sprays will tan the stretch marks along with the surrounding skin to camouflage their appearance.
Sunless tanning treatments performed at a salon, like spray tans, are effective as well at camouflaging stretch marks. However, sun exposure and tanning beds are not recommended methods to hide blemishes. Stretch marks are less likely to tan from ultraviolet exposure.
Clothing Styles
TeensHealth website funded by the Nemours Foundation recommends that individuals use swimwear styles that hide stretch marks. Boy short-style bottoms for swimsuits are cut to cover the thighs and buttocks, a common area for stretch marks to appear. High neck swimwear covers any marks that appear on the chest area. Capri pants or Bermuda shorts are options in warmer weather for those who wish to hide stretch marks on the thighs.
Concealers
If you want to hide stretch marks with makeup, choose a tone that matches your natural skin color. Foundations and concealers are available that are appropriate for application on areas where stretch marks occur, such as the legs and stomach.
Choose a water-resistant type of body makeup that does not come off easily if you plan to be doing any swimming. The makeup should include sun protection if you will be outdoors.
