Just because a fitness program is simple, doesn't mean it will not be effective. The more complicated your fitness program, the greater the chance of making mistakes. If your goal is a trim, flat tummy, simplicity should be a key component of your plan. Take a less-is-more approach to a flat tummy by following some simple steps.

Calorie Reduction

Flattening your tummy requires the loss of fat around your midsection. The most important component of fat loss is burning more calories throughout the day than you eat. Maintaining this negative calorie balance starts with reducing your daily caloric intake.
Each pound of body fat contains about 3,500 calories. Reducing your daily intake by 500 calories will result in about a pound of fat loss per week. You can easily cut 500 calories by reducing your consumption of calorie-containing beverages and condiments.

Small Frequent Meals

Take the advice of the American Council on Exercise by spreading your calories out over five or six small meals per day to maintain your metabolism and energy levels. Eating often will allow you to moderate your caloric intake while experiencing minimal cravings and hunger. Refraining from large meals will also help you maintain your flat tummy by preventing bloating from overeating. Eating frequent meals is easy if you pack healthy foods in a small cooler so you can take them to work or school.

High Water Intake

Maintaining a high water intake is a simple, sure-fire way to keep your belly flat. Sticking to the Mayo Clinic's recommended 2 liters per day will prevent thirst, which can often be mistaken for hunger. Water also serves as a natural diuretic, preventing bloating and eliminating the need for prescription or over-the-counter water pills. Adequate hydration keeps muscles full and healthy, and also helps fight fatigue during exercise.

Daily Walks

Walking is the simplest form of cardiovascular exercise. As pointed out by the American Council on Exercise, it's also an effective way to burn fat and manage your weight. Walking for at least 30 minutes each day will keep your metabolism high making it easier to keep a trim midsection.
