If you want to increase your well-being, adopt some strategies that foster the conditions for happiness. Take steps to decrease the negatives in your life and to increase the positives. If you have difficulty making a particular change, ask friends and family for help or join a support group. Over time, your new life conditions will lead to greater well-being in each area of your life.

General Well-Being

Analyze your life and identify the major problems in it that get in the way of your happiness. For example, if you have an acquaintance that consistently plays a negative role in your life, deal with that person. Either remove the person from your life or work out a communication strategy that helps to alleviate brewing problems. Negative personal habits also decrease your well-being. For instance, if you tend to procrastinate and then stress out as the deadline approaches, identify the behaviors that cause this problem, such as watching too much television or napping during time better spent working. If you take action to eliminate or reduce negative influences in your life, your well-being will increase.
Also, spend more time participating in positive activities. Yoga, meditation and similar practices encourage you to clear your mind of negative thoughts and focus on positive mental states, such as balance and harmony. Take a walk in a park or a drive through scenic country. Volunteer for a charity, which will teach you how to participate in a community of caring people. Finally, develop and deepen your relationships with loved ones. They will be a source of strength for you during rough times as well as the good times.

Physical Well-Being

If you live a healthy life, you will feel better and have more energy during the day. An added benefit of living healthfully is that you are less likely to suffer from some medical conditions, such as obesity or certain types of diabetes. Eat a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Exercise frequently. To make it more fun, choose a physical activity you enjoy, such as participating in a competitive sport or taking a walk in a scenic area. Eliminate unhealthy elements of your life. Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption. Before making any radical changes to your diet or level of physical activity, always consult your doctor. Ask for specific advice about ways you can improve your physical well-being.

Economic Well-Being

Not knowing how you will pay mounting bills or having to scrounge up change from the couch to make it until your next paycheck will stress you out and wear you down. If you are debt-free and financially secure, you will be a happier person. Get control of your finances. Eliminate unnecessary expenses and pay down your debt. Organize your bills and pay them on time to avoid late fees. If you are in a particularly difficult financial position, consult a nonprofit debt-counseling service that will give you the tools to fix your problems. If you regain control of your financial situation, you will increase your happiness and decrease your stress.
