The Northern California city of San Francisco is well known for its hilly, fog-coated landscape--which offers views of San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge--its breathtaking architecture and, perhaps most famously, its vibrant and diverse culture. One of the best times to see the city come alive is during New Year's Eve, when there are many events to stimulate both the body and the mind.
Fireworks
San Francisco's eastern waterfront area, known as the Embarcadero, plays host to a fireworks display every New Year's Eve. You can watch this display for free in several locations, including Fisherman's Wharf, the Ferry Building, Crissy Field, Pier 39 and the Aquatic Park. Alternatively, enjoy the fireworks from a private viewing area at a club or restaurant. The Americano Restaurant, for example, offers an extensive outdoor patio with a clear-tent covering which serves as both a dance floor and a great spot for fireworks viewing.
Clubbing
Nearly all of the clubs and bars in San Francisco put on New Year's Eve parties, many of which feature live bands and DJs. Some of the city's most popular clubbing venues include Aura, Elbo Room, Mist, 111 Minna Gallery, 26 Mix and Apartment 24. If you're looking for a specific theme, Cat Club has featured '80s-themed parties on New Year's Eves-past, while Paradise Lounge has paid homage to the 1990s.
Multimedia Events
To experience something beyond the stereotypical loud, beating music and strobe lights that many clubs provide on New Year's Eve, try getting a ticket to one of San Francisco's many multimedia events. For example, the Sea of Dreams event, typically held at the Concourse Exhibition Center, has been going strong for over a decade. In addition to music, it provides interactive art exhibits and encourages participants to dress up in costume. Alternatively, the Gray Area Foundation for the Arts plays host to an annual New Year's Eve event featuring original works from both visual and audio artists.
Sophisticated Celebrations
For a more sophisticated and traditional New Year's Eve in San Francisco, try heading to Davies Symphony Hall. In years past, the San Francisco Symphony has played host to New Year's celebrations there, featuring live music, dance performances and masquerade balls. Alternatively, you can visit the Ritz-Carlton or the Westin St. Francis on New Year's Eve. Both hotels have black tie events that feature a diverse array of music and performances.
Fine Dining
For a more intimate experience on New Year's Eve in San Francisco, try bringing a date to one of the city's many fine restaurants. Some of the best include Gary Danko, known for its New American cuisine, and Masa's, known for its California French cuisine.
