3 Ways to Use Cocoa Butter to Get Rid of Scars

1. Apply Cocoa Butter With Massage Over Time

While cocoa butter offers many rejuvenating and skin healthy nutrients, it's by no means a panacea. To get good results, you often must apply cocoa butter in a massaging motion on the scar tissue and continue this course of therapy for weeks if not months.

Don't expect a complete fade of the scar, either. Your goal is to break up some of the collagen and exfoliate the area to allow the body to naturally heal the tissue.

2. Supplement Cocoa Butter Therapy With Other Topical Treatments

By attacking the scar tissue with a battery of various moisturizers and dermabrasion techniques, you can theoretically break down the collagen faster and get the cosmetic results you want in a shorter period of time. Of course, just because you use more treatments more often doesn't mean you're going to get great results. Indeed, there is a danger of over treating the area. Furthermore, your tissue needs time to heal from the exfoliation sessions. While cocoa butter is considered a very safe substance to use on the skin, some small percentage of people may experience allergic reactions, particularly if cocoa butter is overused. A good rule of thumb is not to rush the healing process.

3. Supplement Cocoa Butter Therapy With Other, More Direct Scar-Removing Methods

If you have the time and the cash, consider dermabrasion therapy. In this process, a therapist sands off scar tissue and restores the natural topography of the uppermost dermal layer. A more precise (and potentially expensive) alternative is to resurface the skin using a CO2 laser. These procedures require a substantial recovery time, and they work best with relatively recent scars. If the tissue is many years old, you may not get the fade that you desire for a cosmetic effect. That said, using cocoa butter to relieve the pain and burning that can result from these more caustic approaches can be both cost effective and extremely soothing.
