San Francisco is a popular West Coast destination for its landmarks, culture, landscapes and other attractions. However, tourists, thinking of all of California is sun-soaked like the southern part of the state, are often baffled by the fog and cold mists of the city. Still, simply because the sun isn't shining doesn't mean that visitors have to sit in their hotel rooms. There are plenty of activities to do in San Francisco, even on a rainy day.

Rain

San Francisco can be a rainy city, and fog and mist are not uncommon. Because of the city's geography, the different neighborhoods may experience different weather at the same time, but in general, tourists should be prepared for wet weather, especially in the winter months. Natives are used to the problem and continue many of their regular activities, like jogging and surfing, even when the sun isn't out. However, if visitors do have to fill a soggy, miserable day, heading indoors doesn't mean giving up healthy activities.

Spas

Many San Francisco spas are committed to whole-body wellness and offer relaxing massages, acupuncture, traditional healing methods and aromatherapy, all of which can be soothing to jet-lagged travelers, according to the "Lonely Planet City Guide" and "Not for Tourists San Francisco."

Yoga

Many spas have yoga offerings, or visitors can go to one of the yoga studios in the city. As with most large cities, there are yoga classes that fit every area of expertise. Some gyms with yoga studios may offer day passes, so guests can get a more traditional workout as well.

Rock Climbing

A city with so many hills is no stranger to climbing, and an indoor rock wall is a great way to stretch your calves on a gloomy day. Programs for children and novices are available, but even those accustomed to the sport should be able to challenge themselves, according to the "Lonely Planet City Guide."

Alcatraz

Alcatraz may have been harsh for the prisoners who served time there, but visiting the famous prison is one way to pass a rainy day without getting wet. In a true storm, the ferry ride over may be a bit choppy, but the walking tour of the building itself should keep visitors dry, states "Not for Tourists San Francisco."

Dining

San Francisco is a healthy city, with numerous organic, raw food, vegetarian and vegan restaurants. Enjoying a leisurely meal on a gloomy day can be a healthful way to pass the time--and some of those foods may even provide the vitamin D that is usually provided by the sun.
