Blackheads and acne are common problems amongst teens and adults. Not only do these problems cause physical pain, but they can also cause emotional pain in regards to issues with self-esteem. Luckily, much research has been done about acne and blackheads, so that sufferers can try to deal with the problem.
Types
There are two types of acne: noninflammatory and inflammatory. Noninflammatory acne blemishes include blackheads and whiteheads. Blackheads are a brown or black color and can last for a long time. Whiteheads usually appear as little white spots. "A blackhead or whitehead can release its contents to the surface and heal. Or the follicle wall can rupture and inflammatory acne can ensue," says Acne.org. Inflammatory acne includes what are commonly known as pimples or zits. These are inflamed red bumps that are often painful to the touch and may contain pus.
Causes
There are several possible causes of acne. The most common problem tends to be bacteria and oil buildup. "Bacteria that normally live on the skin play a role in acne development. These bacteria produce substances that cause redness and irritation," according to eMedicineHealth.com. Some of the other causes include stress, hormones, diet and sweating. It is not always possible to avoid stress. However, taking some time out of your day to relax might help. Hormones also play a role in acne, usually in the teenage years, but they can continue through the adult years. Diet can sometimes worsen acne, so it is important to drink plenty of water and avoid greasy foods. Yet another cause of acne is sweating. Often athletes cannot avoid this, but they can try to shower or cleanse their faces as soon as possible after exercising.
Effects
Acne can have serious effects on people. Besides causing them to suffer physical pain, acne can cause self-consciousness. If you look in the mirror and do not feel comfortable with yourself, you will most likely carry that negative feeling into your relationships.
Preventions and Solutions
Doing everything to prevent acne can be a solution. Drink plenty of water, avoid greasy foods and stress, if possible, and wash your face morning and night. Be sure to use an oil-free moisturizer every day and a facial mask once a week. Exfoliating the skin can help, too. However, avoid scrubbing too roughly, since this can irritate and worsen the acne. For further help, dermatologist visits are beneficial.
Warnings
Do not touch your face excessively because this only leaves more bacteria on the skin. Also, if you absolutely have to pop a pimple, do it from the sides, using a down-and-in motion. If it is not white at the tip and ready to pop, do not force it. Stop pushing if blood or clear fluid comes out, as this can lead to scarring. Also, for those who use makeup and other cosmetics, look for skincare products that are noncomedogenic, meaning that they do not worsen or cause acne.
