Retin-A Micro is a topical medication of tretinoin that is used for the treatment of acne. Tretinoin is a form of Vitamin A that penetrates the skin's surface to unplug follicles and keep pores clear in order to prevent future breakouts. The Micro form of Retin-A offers microsphere technology to help reduce irritation that can occur. Despite the benefits, there are some side effects associated with using Retin-A Micro

Skin Irritation

The most common side effect with Retin-A Micro is skin irritation, since this medication can be harsh on your skin. This irritation can cause the skin to be excessively red, dry, swollen, crusted or blistered. In this case, it is important to temporarily reduce the frequency of using the medication. Extreme weather such as wind or cold may also be irritating to skin treated with Retin-A Micro. Tretinoin has previously caused severe irritation in patients with eczema, so, if you suffer from this condition, use caution with Retin-A Micro.

Warmth or Stinging

You may experience a sensation of warmth or stinging when you apply Retin-A Micro. This side effect is completely normal and usually lasts only a brief time.

Burning and Itching

Burning and itching may occur after using Retin-A Micro. Sometimes these side effects go away or dissipate after a few weeks. If they become a problem or don't go away, notify your doctor so your dosage can be changed.

Mild Discomfort or Peeling

You may experience mild discomfort or peeling when you first begin using this medication. Sometimes you may even notice a slight blush on your face. This is common in about half the people who take Retin-A Micro. It usually improves within four weeks of starting your treatment, once your skin has gotten used to the medication.

More Breakouts

Because this medication brings pimples to the surface, it is likely that your acne could get worse before it gets better.

Sunburn

Your skin will be more sensitive to sunlight, including sunlamps, and will therefore sunburn more easily. If you have a sunburn or receive a sunburn while using this medication, stop using Retin-A Micro until you have fully recovered. While using Retin-A Micro, always use sunscreen products with an SPF rating of at least 15, and wear protective clothing over your treated areas.

Skin Dryness

Because of the harshness of this medication, you may experience very dry skin. You can remedy the problem by using a strong emollient to keep your skin moist.
