As the movie capital of the world, Los Angeles is no stranger to make-believe, especially at Halloween. There is lots to do on Halloween in the City of Angels, whether you want to dress up or simply observe, spend a lot of time and money or next to nothing. Many of the city's Halloween events reflect the diversity of its population.
Boo at the Zoo
Each year at Halloween the Los Angeles Zoo in Griffith Park hosts "Boo in the Zoo." The Halloween "Boo in the Zoo" activities usually run for a few weekend days around October 31, and they are included in the daily admission charge to the zoo. The events are family-friendly, including a fun house, Halloween arts and crafts, and pumpkin carving. While in Griffith Park, take a ride on mini trains decorated for the holiday as they travel through the grounds of the park, haunted especially for Halloween.
Amusement Park Halloween
Six Flags Magic Mountain, Knott's Berry Farm, Disneyland, Disney Resort and Universal Studios all host special events for Halloween. Some of the parks close early and charge a separate admission for the nighttime Halloween events. Some parks have special Halloween daytime events designed for children included in the day's regular admission charge. Check with the individual park for special events and admission prices.
West Hollywood Costume Carnaval
Each year West Hollywood hosts an outdoor carnival and street fair featuring live entertainment and as many as 400,000 Halloween revelers. The carnival centers around a one-mile evening march of costumed participants down the main drag of West Hollywood.
Dia de los Muertos
The Mexican tradition of "the Day of the Dead" reaches back to early Aztec culture. Today, Dia de los Muertos coincides with the religious celebrations of All Souls Day and All Saints Day, which come right after Halloween. The Los Angeles celebration takes place for a few days around Halloween each year on Olvera Street, the center of the Mexican-American community. Activities range from parades and Aztec dancing to parties and crafts for children.
Run a Race
Southern California is known for its great climate. What better way to justify an all night party than to include a charity benefit race in your Halloween plans? The Race Place keeps track of regular races and fundraisers. There are races on Halloween, as well as on the days right before and right after the holiday.
