Losing vision and direction while under water due to foggy goggles can be frustrating, even damaging, to a swimmer, especially during a race. Goggles may fog up after prolonged use as sealants around loosen, allowing water and air to seep through the cracks. While many pre-packaged defogging solutions are available, a simple homemade solution can be just as effective, more economical, and last much longer than most commercial anti-foggers, according to the Beginner Triathlete website.
Step 1
Mix one part of baby shampoo with five to 10 parts of lukewarm water. Measurements may vary based on the amount of solution you choose to make. Diluted baby shampoo is recommended, as it won't irritate your eyes.
Step 2
Pour the mixed solution into a spray bottle or empty shampoo bottle for easy storage, and convenient transport to the pool or gym.
Step 3
Spray or spread a few drops of the solution evenly on the inside of the goggle lenses before swimming. Spread evenly with your finger. You may then rinse out the solution, or leave it on the goggles if the solution is thin enough that it doesn't impair your vision.
Step 4
Secure the goggles properly to your face before swimming, and avoid touching the lenses with your fingers. Make sure the goggles are tight enough to not let excess air or water in through the sides. They should seal comfortably on your face, but not create pain or discomfort.
Step 5
Reapply solution as needed.
