If you experience a severe toothache and are unable to get an immediate appointment with the dentist, consider home remedies to alleviate your pain. Causes of a severe toothache include decay, infection, abscesses, tooth fractures and gum disease. See your dentist as soon as you can to remedy the underlying cause of the toothache.
Salt Water Rinse
A salt water rinse cleans out of the mouth and draws out some of the fluid that could be causing the severe toothache. Pour 8 oz. of warm water into a glass and mix in 2 tsp. of salt. Swish the mixture in your mouth for several minutes before spitting it out. Avoid using hot or cold water since this can cause tooth sensitivity.
Dogwood
GrannyMed.com recommends Jamaican dogwood as a home remedy for toothaches due to its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. To make a tea with the bark from the Jamaican dogwood, place 1 tsp. of the bark in a cup of boiling water. Allow the tea to brew for several minutes, then strain out the bark before drinking. Repeat as many as three times per day.
Ice
MotherNature.com states that putting ice between the thumb and forefinger can block the nerve pulses that cause toothache pain. Massage the area for five minutes to relieve the pain. Wrapping a towel around an ice pack and placing it on the outside of your mouth is another home remedy for a severe toothache.
Clove Oil
Clove oil contains the compound eugenol, a natural pain reliever. Saturate a cotton ball with clove oil and place it directly on the site of the toothache. Avoid swallowing the clove oil or allowing your tongue to come in contact with it due to the unpleasant taste.
