Losing weight can be challenging, yet it is so important for millions of Americans who are overweight and obese. Though many people have the true desire to lose weight, they sometimes face barriers along the way that prevent them from being successful at reaching their weight loss goals. Realizing all of the potential barriers to weight loss can help you to create additional plans and overcome the barriers.

Lack of Knowledge

One of the most common barriers that stands in the way of people losing weight is lack of knowledge. You may want to eat healthy, but knowing which foods are truly healthy can be a challenge. For example, many people think of salads as healthy, yet with all the toppings and full-fat dressing, they can have more calories than a burger. Exercise can be confusing and intimidating, especially if you are unsure of yourself in a crowded gym. The Mayo Clinic advises educating yourself about any dietary changes necessary for weight loss before you begin.

Lack of Time

Some people know exactly what they need to do in order to lose weight. They know that they need to cook fresh, healthy foods and exercise more often. Yet their busy lifestyle prevents them from taking these steps. You may not have enough time to exercise, or you may find yourself eating out more often to save time, instead of cooking healthy foods which encourage weight loss.

Lack of Motivation

The Mayo Clinic states that people often want to lose weight yet struggle with motivation to do so. Weight loss requires a lot of action, and action can be scary for some people. Some people feel more comfortable thinking about weight loss than actually getting motivated to make change.

Stress

According to the Family Education Network, people who are very stressed have a harder time losing weight since stress causes their bodies to release hormones that influence fat retention. Stress is a major barrier to weight loss because not everyone can reduce the stress in their life. Whether it is due to medical problems, financial situations or relationship issues, stress can prevent weight loss.
