Midol Complete is an over-the-counter analgesic, diuretic and stimulant. The three active ingredients work together to relieve pain, cramps, bloating and other symptoms associated with the menstrual cycle. Available in tablet or gel cap form, Midol can be taken once every 6 hours.
Acetaminophen
Acetaminophen, also the active ingredient in Tylenol, provides pain relief. Cramps, backaches, muscle aches and breast tenderness are all associated with menstruation. According to the Tufts Journal, acetaminophen works by inhibiting an enzyme known as cyclooxygenase. Cyclooxygenase is a catalyst for the conversion of a fatty acid to substances known as prostaglandins. Prostaglandins produce pain, inflammation and fever. (See Reference 4) Midol Complete contains 500 milligrams of acetaminophen. (See Reference 1) According to Drugs.com, drinking alcohol is contraindicated with the use of this medication. (See Reference 2) Adhere to the dosage directions and be aware of acetaminophen in other medications you may be taking simultaneously. If acetaminophen is taken in excess or with alcohol, there is a potential for severe liver damage.
Pyrilamine Maleate
Many women experience fluid retention during menstruation. Pyrilamine maleate, a diuretic, causes the body to release extra fluid by urination. Bloating and pain is relieved with the use of diuretics. Midol Complete contains 15 milligrams of pyrillamine maleate per caplet. Increase fluid intake when taking Midol because pyrilamine maleate and caffeine both increase the risk of dehydration.
Caffeine
Caffeine, the stimulant ingredient in Midol Complete, helps combat fatigue associated with menstruation. The 60 milligrams of caffeine in Midol affects the body like drinking a cup of coffee. Caffeine also promotes diuresis, thus relieving stomach bloat. While taking Midol, avoid other sources of caffeine like green tea and coffee. According to Drugs.com excessive caffeine intake may cause nervousness, irritability, trouble sleeping, dizziness, or a fast heartbeat. (See Reference 3)
