Metabolism is the process by which an individual converts the food that is eaten into energy that can then be used by the body. Having a fast metabolism is associated with staying slim and having plenty of energy. For those not naturally gifted with a rapid metabolism, there are healthy and natural ways to raise one's metabolism.
Lift Weights
Information published by Ohio State University states that people with more muscle and less fat have higher metabolisms. A good way to increase muscle mass is to hit the weights. Muscle-building weight routines involve working with weights that you can lift for three sets of six to eight repetitions.
Ease into weight routines, as there will be initial soreness. Beginning too aggressively can cause major discomfort in days to follow. Alternate muscle groups that you work day to day. Never continue weight exercises that cause pain, and work with a spotter whenever using free weights.
Aerobic Exercise
While more muscle mass will typically lead to having a higher metabolism, any exercise can help step up an individual's metabolic rate. The President's Council on Fitness and Sports points out that aerobic or cardiovascular exercise not only increases metabolism during exercise, but metabolism stays elevated for some time after the workout is over. Taking a jog or riding your bike will leave you burning more energy even after you've hit the couch.
Eat More Meals
Some approaches to losing weight involve drastically cutting caloric intake, but this is not advisable if you want the weight-loss advantage of an increased metabolism. Stoking your body's energy supply early in the day and continuing with sensible meals throughout the day is advocated by Gaiam Life.
A schedule of six meals a day will get your body processing energy and keep energy levels constant. Low-calorie diets can trick the body into thinking it's starving, which will slow metabolism. Plus, having a few large meals can create peaks and crashes in your energy level throughout the day.
Magnesium and Vitamin B
Certain elements can facilitate the conversion of food to energy because they are necessary in the biochemical reactions that take place, and having ample supplies allows metabolism to run at full speed. According to "The Today Show," two of the best elements for this for this are B vitamins and Magnesium. Some foods provide ample supplies of one or the other, but spinach and soy beans will provide high amounts of both in one package.
No Magic Bullet
There are many supplements and chemicals on the market that claim to increase metabolism and fat burning without the burden of having to exercise or eat sensibly. Supplement claims are not regulated by the FDA. The University of Maryland Medical Center cautions against many of their typical ingredients. The best of which are not harmful, the worst of which may not only fail in their intended purpose, but cause digestive or physical problems.
