5 Ways to Prevent Third-Degree Burns

1. Provide a Safe Environment

Prevention of third-degree burns begins by removing potential hazards that can cause burns in the first place. Examine your home or work environment for anything that is "an accident waiting to happen." There are simple measures you can take that will provide a safe environment for you and your family. For instance, if you burn candles in your home, make sure they are on a solid surface that can't be knocked over. Place candles out of reach of your children or pets.

2. Check Electrical Outlets and Cords

Electrical outlets are especially attractive to children. Put covers on all outlets to eliminate the temptation for your child to stick something into the holes. An electrical burn is very painful, and the possibility of electrical shock and death is high, especially for small children. Check all electrical cords regularly and remove any that show any signs of wear or damage.

3. Remove Steam Hazards

Hot steam burns can reach the level of third-degree involvement. This type of burn can come from opening a steaming pot of liquids, so always lift lids away from you. It can also come from a hot-steam vaporizer. When using a vaporizer or humidifier, use only a cool-mist model and make sure it is on a stable surface, out of reach of children and pets.

4. Monitor Appliance Use

The use of appliances such as curling irons or steam irons for pressing clothes should be carefully supervised until a child is old enough to understand safety issues clearly. It only takes one quick touch of a hot curling iron to create a severe burn, especially on a child. Other appliances, such as coffeepots, slow cookers and electric indoor grills should be placed away from the edge of the counter and out of reach of small children.

5. Check Your Smoke Alarm

Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and make sure you change the batteries twice a year. An active alarm system can alert you and your family to potential fire and allow you the time it takes to exit your home to safety. For added safety, don't smoke while in bed or if you're taking medications that inhibit your ability to stay alert and think clearly.
