3 Ways to Control an MRSA Infection

1. Use Effective Antibiotics

You may be worried that your MRSA infection may be difficult to treat because the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria that caused it are resistant to many antibiotics. Fear not, as there are still effective treatment options available to you. Your doctor may immediately turn to vancomycin, a powerful antibiotic that's known to kill even highly resistant bacteria, to treat your staph infection. Depending on the strain of Staphylococcus bacteria you're infected with, you may be prescribed other antibiotics that are known to be effective at controlling them. However, because doctors are seeing more and more cases of resistant bacteria, they may opt to control your condition without drugs if it's confined to a localized area.

2. Treat an MRSA Infection Without Drugs

To control a staph infection naturally, your doctor may choose to drain your abscesses and wait to see what happens. Sometimes, this alone is enough to clear up the infection. While most antibiotic creams aren't terribly effective against Staphylococcus bacteria, you might choose to apply one, if directed by your doctor, to prevent secondary infections.

3. Cover Your Wounds

If you have skin wounds, you should keep them clean and covered, regardless of whether they're known to be infected with MRSA or not. Should you have an infected cut or scrape, the pus might contain traces of staph bacteria, which can spread to other areas of your body unless you act to control them. At least once per day, clean your wounds by applying peroxide to the affected site with a sterile cotton ball or other application material. After cleaning, wrap the wound with a dry, clean surgical bandage and avoid irritating the skin. If you combine this technique with antibiotic treatments, you should be able to control your staph infection without complications. However, it's important to be communicative with your doctor, since staph infections can last a long time and become quite nasty.
