A stationary indoor bike is an ideal choice if you don't have time to get to the gym, or if you don't have the space for a larger cardiovascular-exercise machine. Stationary bikes are good for arthritis sufferers in particular, as they allow for a cardiovascular workout with minimal stress on weight-bearing joints. Standard features you should look for in a stationary bike are varying resistance levels, and a console that monitors time, speed, and calories burned.

Marcy PL-43211

The Consumer Search website rated this the best upright stationary bike for those on a budget. This kind of bike more closely resembles a street bike than do recumbent stationary models. Priced at around $150 as of 2010, the Marcy has eight levels of resistance, and an LCD display that monitors all the standard statistics. It comes with a two-year warranty, and has a suggested weight limit of 300 pounds.

Schwinn 230

This recumbent bike --- which allows the rider to sit with his back against a backrest and legs out in front --- comes with a few extras, including heart-rate monitors in the hand grips, 16 levels of resistance, and a dozen workout programs. The Schwinn, priced around $450 as of 2010, has several warranties, including 10 years on the frame, one year on mechanical and electric parts, six months on wear items, and 90 days on labor. The Schwinn also has a 300-pound weight limit.

Spring XBR25

If you have a few extra bucks and are looking to get the most out of your workout, this club-level recumbent model boasts a wide array of features. For around $1,200 as of 2010, the XBR25 has 20 resistance levels, a 16-position adjustable seat, and a 350-pound weight limit. There are eight pre-programmed workouts, Consumer Search reports, and a high-end heart-rate monitor. The bike frame and brake have a lifetime warranty, while parts are covered for five years, and labor for one.
