Your face has more than 10 bones and 12 muscles along with arteries, veins and nerve endings that can all benefit from facial exercises. Just as you go to the gym to tone your body, you can improve the appearance of your face with regular exercise. You can also stimulate blood flow and circulation and relieve stress by working the strength and flexibility of your facial muscles.
Muscles Around Eyes
The skin around your eyes is the thinnest of the whole body and wrinkles the easiest. This exercise will not eliminate the fine lines but it will make them less noticeable. Simply wink one eye partially and hold for one second. This seems like a very easy thing to do, which is why you should do 50 repetitions. Complete the same motion with your other eye 50 times.
Muscles Around Mouth
Pull the sides of your mouth open with your index fingers so your lips are wide. Contract your mouth while providing resistance from your index fingers and hold for two seconds. Next, contract your mouth even harder until your index fingers are close. This exercise is both isometric and isotonic. Isotonic occurs when there is a change in length of the muscle, and it's isometric because you hold the muscle tension for a second or two. This exercise will strengthen the orbicularis oris muscle.
Chin Muscle
This exercise is designed to work the platysma muscles at the front of the neck as well as the chin muscles, helping to prevent the dreaded turkey-neck. Splash some water on your face or apply a lubricant to the skin around the chin before you start. Elevate the lower lip until the mentalis muscle of the chin is contracted. Next, lower the chin while keeping your head still. Do this exercise with an emphasis on perfect form for 12 repetitions.
