For football players, footwear is equally as important as the other equipment you wear. Different types of football cleats are available depending on what position you play, but no matter what style you go with, it's important that they fit correctly so you can be at the top of your game and stay safe on the playing field. Sometimes the way a pair of cleats is constructed can be an important part of your decision.
Outsole
The outsole is usually constructed of plastic or a synthetic material that is fitted with the actual spikes or cleats. The spikes can either be molded plastic or detachable plastic. Spikes are usually specially designed for specific field types, such as field turf or grass, to help a player dig in and resist force against his movement forward. They're typically molded horizontally across the shoe to give more front driven support, and have a center toe cleat that allows for improved traction during quick starts, according to Dick's Sporting Goods' Guide to Buying Football Cleats.
Midsole
The midsole is the part of the shoe that can be found between the outsole and the insole. The midsole usually provides cushioning, and in some cleat brands, the midsole is designed to disperse pressure on the foot. In football, players exert a great deal of pressure on the foot--up to seven times the body weight, depending on position.
Insole
The insole is the part of the shoe that actually surrounds your foot. Many football cleat manufacturers will offer a "molded" insole, which hugs the foot tightly for added support. This part of the cleat usually offers more cushioning to supplement the midsole for added comfort.
Upper
The "upper" part of a football cleat is usually made of leather or some type of synthetic material. This part of the shoe either ends below the ankle (low-cut), at the ankle (mid-cut) or above the ankle (high-tops). The upper is constructed in these variations to accommodate for the different positions and physical requirements of the game. For example, high-tops give players extra ankle support and are made primarily for linemen. Low-cut cleats are lightweight and made primarily for position players like running backs and receivers--players who rely on maneuverability on the field.
Considerations
Most major manufacturers of sports shoes make football cleats. When purchasing cleats, be sure you know the rules for your individual league regarding cleat length and type. For example, some levels of football may not allow 1-inch spikes, even though they are readily available.
