Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays a very important role in your mental and physical well-being. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, serotonin is converted from the chemical 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), made from tryptophan, an essential amino acid obtained from food. Serotonin helps to control mood and behavior; a deficit of serotonin may leave you feeling anxious, depressed or dealing with a sleep disorder. You can use certain herbal remedies to boost serotonin production. Since most herbs are listed as dietary supplements, and are therefore not federally regulated, you should always consult your physician before taking any herbal remedy.

Ginkgo biloba

According to the National Institutes of Health Medline Plus website, ginkgo biloba is an herb that has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. It is one of the most popularly sold herbal supplements, commonly used to enhance memory and concentration. It may also alleviate some of the symptoms of PMS and fight depression. Ginkgo may help to increase blood flow to the brain, causing an increase in the absorption of nutrients and thus a higher production of serotonin. According to Dr. Linda Page in her book, "Stress & Energy: Reduce Your Stress & Boost Your Energy," ginkgo biloba may counteract age-dependent reduced serotonin binding sites in the brain, helping your serotonin levels to stabilize.

St. John's Wort

St. John's wort has been used for over 2,000 years for a wide variety of health needs. If you smoke, abuse alcohol or have a high sugar intake, your body's ability to produce serotonin may be compromised. According to Dr. Page, St. John's wort is a natural serotonin booster that may help to combat the serotonin deficiency caused by these habits. It may work as well as, or better than, prescription anti-depressants. It can help you to feel calmer, more relaxed and provide you with an elevated mood.

Rhodiola

Rhodiola is Russian herb that is beginning to gain popularity in the United States and Canada. It is used to prevent fatigue, increase concentration and alleviate stress. According to Dr. Page, rhodiola enhances the transport of 5-HTP and tryptophan into the brain, causing a boost in serotonin production. Taking a rhodiola supplement may help decrease the symptoms of depression, helping you feel less tired, and providing you with an uplifted mood.
