Shortness of breath is often experienced as wheezing, rapid breathing, or apnea---periods of cessation of breathing, as is the case with sleep apnea. Generally, shortness of breath is anticipated with strenuous exertion or exercise. However, unexplained shortness of breath is considered a symptom of another problem, such as obstruction of air passage, respiratory infection, heart disease, stroke, or emotional distress, according to the Mayo Clinic. Signs and symptoms of shortness of breath may be easily recognized, or subtle, and include chest discomfort, a barking cough, shortness of breath upon slight exertion, wheezing, waking up in the night short of breath, or even emotional distress.
Sit down
When experiencing shortness of breath during activity, sitting down to rest is often helpful, as it can relieve symptoms that are related to strenuous activity and physical exertion. It also gives one a chance to make note of any symptoms that accompany the shortness of breath and the timing of it.
Take deep breaths
In the case of shortness of breath due to emotional distress, such as a panic attack, inhaling and exhaling slowly five times will often break the cycle of shortness of breath and provide much-needed relief. Also, it may be helpful to breathe slowly into a paper bag to regain regular breathing rhythm and relieve severe, acute anxiety. Anxiety is a powerful physical stressor for some people, and shortness of breath related to stress must be addressed promptly. Additionally, stress-related physical problems like shortness of breath, over time, may affect overall health and well-being.
Lose weight
According to the Mayo Clinic, obesity may also cause shortness of breath in some people. Shortness of breath may be an early sign of the need to lose weight. It is important to eat a balanced diet and eat sensibly to prevent the many complications of obesity.
Stop smoking
Smoking is a cause for concern for anyone, especially those experiencing shortness of breath. Smoking robs the body of vital oxygen, causes cancer and promotes overall poor health. It is important for anyone to quit smoking, particularly those with shortness of breath, as it may complicate the underlying cause of the respiratory distress.
Exercise regularly
It is important to exercise regularly for optimum health and wellness. Walking, jogging, lifting weights, and doing sports such as volleyball, basketball, and even dancing are helpful for losing weight and getting in shape. Exercise generally energizes the body and strengthens and tones musculature. However, if even light exercise causes shortness of breath, it may be a sign of a significant health concern.
Consult a physician
In the event that the symptoms of shortness of breath persist, particularly when unexplained or at rest, consult a physician promptly. It may be a sign of a serious cardiac or respiratory problem that requires urgent or ongoing treatment.
