1. Get Proper Prenatal Care
While there is no known way to actually prevent the occurrence of cerebral palsy, the most effective way to lower the risk of having a child with this neurological impairment is to obtain the proper prenatal care as soon as you find out you are pregnant. That means finding a trusted physician who specializes in obstetrics and showing up for all scheduled appointments and exams. If you have any existing medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes or anemia, then this is even more vital to the health of your child.
2. Eat Right and Exercise While you are Pregnant
It's common sense to take care of yourself while you are pregnant. But eating the right foods, taking the right combination of prenatal vitamins and exercising under a doctor's supervision may also reduce the risk of a premature delivery. Premature babies are more vulnerable to cerebral palsy, since their skulls are more delicate and less effective at preventing brain damage during delivery. If you do decide upon an exercise regimen, be careful not to overdo it either. Discuss your exercise plans with your doctor before proceeding.
3. Protect Your Infant From Injury
Cerebral palsy can actually be caused by brain injuries that may occur in the early stages of a child's physical development. You don't need to be told about how fragile and delicate a newborn baby is, but even the slightest wrong movement can put your child at risk for brain damage, and possibly cerebral palsy. Never shake your baby or allow your baby to fall. Use infant car seats that offer the maximum amount of protection for your baby's head, and ensure that your baby is always strapped in tightly. You may also want to check your home for lead exposure, since this can also cause brain damage if inhaled or ingested.
