Los Angeles is a great city for active young people. The city lists 28 different types of public recreational areas, from pools and parks to museums and skate parks. There are thousands of acres of California state parks in Los Angeles County and dozens of miles of beaches. Many of the outdoor activities are fully accessible.
Griffith Park
At 4,000 acres, Griffith Park is one of the largest public parks in the United States. The park includes the Los Angeles Zoo, the Griffith Park Observatory and the Autry National Center, a museum of the West. In Griffith Park, you can rent bicycles and ride trails in the Santa Monica Mountains. You can hike trails, picnic, ride a merry-go-round, golf, play tennis or swim. The park is open to the public. Some attractions and features charge a fee.
Skating and Cycling
Los Angeles County maintains seven skate parks, four within the city limits of Los Angeles. A cycling path goes from the Will Rogers State Park north of Santa Monica all the way to the Palos Verde Peninsula, a trek of almost 20 miles. Along the way you can stop and watch planes take off and land at Los Angeles International Airport. While on the bike path, watch for signs to make sure you stay on the route.
Amusement Parks
Southern California boasts several of the world's greatest amusement parks. Knott's Berry Farm, Universal Studios, Six Flags Magic Mountain and Disneyland are all located in the Los Angeles area.
The Beach
Along the coastline of Los Angeles are miles of beach. You can swim, sunbathe, jog and find or start a volleyball game. Los Angeles County maintains beaches for public use and access. The county provides lifeguards during daylight hours.
The Santa Monica Mountains
The Santa Monica Mountain Conservancy maintains over 60,000 acres of natural beauty across Los Angeles. You can find trails in the Santa Monica Mountains that range in difficulty and length. Many offer extraordinary views of the city and the Pacific Ocean. Many trails are easily accessible from areas within central Los Angeles.
