Back hair is a serious cosmetic concern for many people, especially during the summer when shirts and bathing suits will leave the back exposed. Numerous options for hair removal are available if you desire a smooth, clean-looking back. The most appropriate choice depends on your budget, the amount of hair you want removed and how long you hope your results will last. You should consider the pros and cons of each hair removal method before making your choice.

Shaving

Shaving is the best way to remove back hair if you desire rapid--but temporary--results. While shaving is inexpensive and quick, your hair may return within hours or days and cause itching and skin irritation. To prevent ingrown hairs and minimize cuts and razor burn, the Nemours Foundation recommends softening your hair with warm water before shaving, using shaving cream or gel, changing your razor blades frequently and shaving in the direction of hair growth. You may need assistance from a friend or family member to reach some areas of your back.

Cream Depilatories

Depilatories work by breaking down and softening body hair. Use a depilatory on your back hair if you find shaving the area difficult or if you experience frequent ingrown hairs. Apply the cream to your back, leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes or per the manufacturer's directions. Wipe the cream and hair off your skin with a damp towel. Planned Parenthood states that depilatory creams may be irritating to sensitive skin. They may also trigger or worsen acne breakouts in some people. Depilatories are available in most pharmacies and beauty supply stores.

Waxing

Over-the-counter (OTC) home waxing kits are best for removing large areas of back hair. Waxing is more expensive than shaving and may be painful, especially when done at home, but the process typically keeps hair away for several weeks, according to Columbia University. You can also visit a salon for a professional waxing if you are unable to wax your own back or are concerned about pain.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis is a procedure that removes hair by the administration of an electrical current directly to the hair's root. This current kills the root and prevents the hair from regrowing. Electrolysis is expensive and generally requires multiple visits office visits before your back is completely free of hair. Electrolysis is the only method of hair removal that is completely permanent, according to the Ask Men website.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is another option for removing back hair. Laser treatment is less painful than electrolysis and the results are permanent in some cases. Laser therapy is expensive. There is no guarantee that your hair will not grow back. Planned Parenthood explains that laser therapy removes hair by directing a beam of light through the skin to disable the hair's follicle.
